We are looking for a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Engineer to join our team, conducting electrical safety tests on appliances across various locations in Kent. This role is suited for a reliable, customer-focused professional who takes pride in their work and is comfortable with regular travel.
As a PAT Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring electrical appliances meet safety standards in commercial and residential settings. You will interact with customers daily, providing excellent service while maintaining efficiency and high-quality testing.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) on-site at client locations.
Maintain accurate records of tests performed and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Provide professional customer service, addressing any client queries regarding appliance safety.
Travel between multiple job sites daily, covering locations across Central Kent.
Ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
Participate in regular audits to maintain service quality.
Work efficiently to meet performance targets including:
- Number of items tested
- Customer satisfaction
- Punctuality
- Quality of test results
Requirements:
It is recommended that engineers be relatively fit, as the role may involve physical activity such as moving equipment and working in varied environments.
Must hold a full UK driving licence and have own vehicle.
Experience in PAT testing is preferred but not essential. If you have electrical experience, that's fantastic! But don't worry if you don't—full training will be provided.
City & Guilds 2377 qualification is not required, but candidates who already hold it will receive a £325 signing bonus. If they leave or are dismissed due to poor performance within 12 months, they may be required to repay the signing bonus.
If a candidate does not already have the City & Guilds 2377 qualification, we will cover the cost of the course upon successful completion. However, employees must complete the training within a set timeframe and remain employed for at least 12 months, or they may be required to repay the course cost if they leave or are dismissed due to poor performance.
Comfortable with travelling regularly and working independently.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Hours & Work Schedule:
Contracted 30 hours per week.
Shifts are scheduled in advance and are typically around 6 hours per day, though some shifts may be longer (up to 10 hours).
Once contracted hours are fulfilled, there is no obligation to accept additional work, though overtime may be available at the standard hourly rate.
Shifts will always be within 08:00 - 18:00 (excluding travel time), with no requirement to work outside these hours, though occasional out-of-hours shifts may be offered.
Breaks:
- Shifts up to 6 hours: Optional 15-minute unpaid break.
- Shifts over 6 hours: Mandatory 30-minute unpaid break.
Travel & Mileage Reimbursement:
Regular travel is required, but we aim to keep engineers as local as possible.
Mileage will be reimbursed at a structured rate per mile, including:
1) Fixed wear and tear payment:15p per mile.
2) Variable fuel payment, based on:
- 40 MPG (fixed)
- Average fuel price at the time of payroll (higher of petrol or diesel, based on UK government rates).
3) Labour contribution:25p per mile.
If you are concerned about upfront fuel costs, we can provide a fuel card, which you can use as much as needed throughout the month. The cost of the fuel used will then be deducted from your pay, ensuring that there is no double compensation while still covering your fuel expenses conveniently.
Performance Incentives:
Annual bonus based on company performance.
Commission available: 5p per appliance tested. The number of tests completed per hour can vary significantly based on location and the engineer's experience, but around 300 tests per day is typical, providing an indication of potential commission earnings.
To qualify for commission, engineers must meet minimum quality standards (e.g., no failed audits within that month).
Annual pay review conducted, including per mile payments.
Internal promotion opportunities will be available for management positions within the next few years.
Why Join Us?
If we are experiencing a quiet period, we may ask for assistance with admin or marketing tasks, within reason. If there is no additional work available that week, you will not be required to come into work but must remain available between 08:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday, in case of last-minute bookings or urgent tasks. You will still be paid your full salary even if there isn't enough work available.
Statutory holiday entitlement: You will receive the legal minimum of 5.6 weeks (28 days) of paid holiday per year, pro-rata based on your contracted hours. This includes bank holidays.
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP): If you are too ill to work, you may be eligible for SSP, currently £116.75 per week (as of 2024), provided you meet the minimum earnings threshold and have been sick for at least 4 consecutive days. SSP is payable for up to 28 weeks.
All equipment and uniform provided, but you will need to provide your own safety boots/shoes.
Stable and guaranteed salary with a clear structure.
Flexible work arrangements with no obligation to work beyond contracted hours.
Paid training opportunities for professional development.
Fair and structured mileage reimbursement ensuring travel expenses are covered.
Career growth opportunities, with plans for internal promotions in management.
If you are a trustworthy, hard-working professional who enjoys working independently and is great with customers, we would love to hear from you!
Please note: We reserve the right to make changes to commission and per mile rates at any time; however, any changes will be clearly communicated with 30 days' notice to current employees.
