Mears provides temporary accommodation to asylum seekers whilst their claim is being assessed in three regions: Northeast, Yorkshire and Humber, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. As a PAT Tester you will be required to visit approximately 10 tenanted properties per day across the Northeast, travelling between locations as part of their daily duties. The role involves attending properties to test Mears supplied white goods, including fridges, kettles, microwaves, irons, hoovers and washing machines. The successful candidate must accurately complete testing documentation, recording appliance details and electrical readings, and capture clear before and after photographs of each item using a PDA, including images of the appliance and the PAT testing label. The tester may also be required to request photographs of white goods to confirm identification. Any failed items must be reported promptly to the Facilities Supervisor. Appliances such as fridges and washing machines must not be removed, as replacements will be arranged by the Facilities Supervisor. This role will be lone working unless a 2-person visit is required.

As part of your role, your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Conduct thorough Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) to ensure compliance with current electrical safety standards.
Perform quality assurance checks to identify faults, defects, or potential safety risks in electrical appliances.
Analyse test results and accurately document findings in line with compliance requirements.
Provide clear and professional communication to stakeholders, explaining test results and recommending corrective actions where needed.
Maintain and care for all testing equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and functioning correctly.
Complete quarterly meter readings across designated campus buildings and record data accurately.
Work independently across multiple sites within the university estate, managing workload efficiently.
Ensure all work complies with current health & safety regulations and electrical safety best practices.
Stay up to date with industry standards, guidance, and legislative changes relating to PAT testing and electrical safety.
Maintain a high standard of record keeping and reporting for audit and compliance purposes.
What are we looking for?

Must have Right to Work in the UK and willingness to undergo a DBS check.
Proven experience in PAT testing
Relevant qualification such as:
C&G 2377-77 (current) or
C&G 2377-32 / 2377-22 (legacy but acceptable) or equivalent
Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
Ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently
Basic IT skills (for recording results, certificates, etc.)
Desirable:
Good verbal and written communication skills
Customer-facing skills with a professional manner
Comfortable working in a dynamic environment / meeting new people

About the Role

We are looking for PAT Test Engineers to join our team, working from a home base in the Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire area (LU, AL, SG postcodes) and the surrounding areas.

The role involves the inspection and testing of portable appliances on commercial sites. You will work solely on commercial sites, including facilities management, retail, commercial, education, councils and local authorities. We do not carry out domestic housing work.

You will use our bespoke testing software, built with engineer input over a number of years and designed entirely around speed and efficiency of testing. If you have ideas to improve it further, we want to hear them, and feedback is regularly built into future updates.
A method statement is agreed with the client before you arrive on site, so expectations are clear from the outset. We focus on larger sites and bigger jobs wherever possible, giving engineers the opportunity to stay on site longer and earn more. Work is organised on a regional basis, so while we try to reduce travel time where we can, we are not able to guarantee work will always be local.

You are contracted to 40 hours per week, with overtime opportunities available for those looking to earn more. There may be occasions when out of hours or weekend work is required depending on client access and site type.

Key Responsibilities
Carrying out portable appliance testing across a range of commercial sites
Completing minor remedial works where required
Producing accurate test reports to be quality checked by our Technical Manager
Working closely with the Technical Manager and Operations team
Using our bespoke testing software, designed for speed and efficiency
Working across facilities management, retail, commercial, education and local authority sites
Helping identify ways to improve testing software and processes

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
A recognised electrical qualification or equivalent PAT testing qualification, preferably as a time served tester
Proven experience testing through and through
A proven ability to work safely in accordance with company policies and safety legislation
Dedication to keep up to date with current legislation and undertake training as required

Salary and Benefits

We offer a competitive basic salary of £27,000, along with:
Bonus of £0.15 per item for 325+ items, rising to £0.25 per item for 375+ items, and £0.35 per item for 425+ items
Overtime paid at £0.40 per item from the 1st test for weekend work and hours over 40 per week
All visual tests count as half an item for bonus and overtime purposes

Duties:

- Perform PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) on a variety of electrical equipment.
- Identify and document any faults or issues found during testing.
- Repair or replace basic faults as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of all tests performed and results obtained on a downloadable tester provided to you.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with team members and clients.
- Provide leadership and guidance to junior technicians when required.
